PIER 70, A LANDMARK BUILDING

For well over 100 years, Potrero Point, where Pier 70 sits on San Francisco’s eastern waterfront, was one of the shipbuilding centers of the entire West Coast. Ferryboats, schooners and river steamboats were built there, as well as warships that fought the country’s battles from the Spanish-American War to Vietnam. This small cape of land, extending along Illinois Street from Mariposa Street south to 22nd Street, was the home of at least a half dozen major manufacturing and utility companies that played significant roles in the western and national economies, and in military and labor history. During World War II, approximately 18,500 men and women were employed here, working three shifts a day, seven days a week.
